We were third in
the table going into this 'should win' away fixture. But Kinell. I'm so
glad Christina couldn't get to this game - on this performance she'd
have dumped me! Today Charlton managed to get their revenge. Bastards.
Same old story - we played well for the first 15 or 20 minutes and if
we'd managed to get a goal (bring on Anelka) then it could have been a
different story all together. As early as the third minute, Diouf
volleyed over the bar and this set the tone for the first 20 minutes.
Stelios bottled a one-on-one with the goalkeeper minutes later and
fluffed a header on 26 minutes. In between these efforts, Ambrose put
the ball in the back of the net and was harshly ruled offside.
Then, on 28 minutes, came the match's crucial moment. Hermann
Hreidarsson caught Kevin Davies with an elbow and was sent off. This
should have driven Bolton on to win the game. It didn't. Dowie (Mr.
Incredible) cleverly reorganised his side and all the energy and
creativity seemed to drain away from the Whites. However, as the teams
left the field for the half time break, Bolton should have been looking
forward to putting Charlton to the cosh in the second.

It didn't happen. Charlton had the better of the opening exchanges after
the break and El-Karkouri should have scored from an Andy Reid cross. On
56 minutes, Bolton were awarded a penalty. Diouf stepped up and Carson
pulled off a fantastic save.
This seemed to give Charlton hope and when Ben Haim clumsily fouled Bent
a few minutes later, the England striker sent the goalie the wrong way
and Charlton scored. Worse followed for Bolton, with Davies being sent
off for elbowing. He should have known better. Being the victim in the
first half, it was obvious that the referee would be looking for a
similar offence to even things up.

With five minutes to go, Bent wrapped the points up, slotting the ball
past Jaaskelainen. Tal went close for Bolton a few minutes later but
Carson, again, pulled off a great save. So, a wonderful record comes to
an end at The Valley. I wouldn't like to be a Bolton player on the coach
back. Charlton did really well when down to 10 men and Bolton just
didn't get a grip of the game. Charlton were well worth the three
points.

Having said that, Bolton should have been 2-0 up at half time and, if we
had converted the penalty, we should really have continued our
impressive run against Charlton. A more clinical striker would have got
us the points.
Bring on The Incredible Sulk............
